Nutrition Labelling

Nutrition labelling on food packaging provides nutrition information at the point-of-purchase. It allows consumers to compare the nutrient content of products and to find out how that food can contribute to the daily diet. Nutrition labelling also creates an incentive for food manufacturers to introduce healthier alternatives into the marketplace.

Currently, there are three types of nutrition labelling:

  1. Nutrition Information Panel
  2. Healthier Choice Symbol
    - List of Products with Healthier Choice Symbol
  3. Nutrient Claims and Nutrient Function Claims
To encourage the food companies to participate in the programme, we are currently offering to assist food companies perform 'indirect' analysis of recipes using food composition database at no charge. We are also processing applications for the Healthier Choice Symbol at no charge.

Nutrition Information Labels

Making food choices is a constant dilemma for shoppers when faced with the large variety of eye dazzling displays on the shelves.

"Which to buy?"
"How does one product compare with the others?"
"Which is better value for money?"

These are but some of the questions that run through one's mind while pushing the trolley through the aisles.

Thumbs up to the companies which have displayed the Nutrition Information Panel (NIP) on their food packaging. A Nutrition Information Panel looks like this :

  Servings per package : 4
  Serving size : 250mL (1 glass)
  Per serving : Per 100mL
     Per serving    Per 100mL
  Energy   163 kcal (680 kJ)   65 kcal (272 kJ)
  Protein   7.8 g   3.1 g
  Total fat   9.5 g   3.8 g
  Saturated fat   6.0 g   2.4 g
  Cholesterol   35 mg   14 mg
  Carbohydrate   11.5 g   4.6 g
  Dietary fibre   0 g   0 g
  Sodium   100 mg   40 mg
This panel will help answer some of the questions shoppers have.

A Closer Look At The NIP

  1. The eight nutrients listed are especially useful for health conscious consumers. They can also be read by persons on special diets e.g., diabetics. Knowing the nutrient content of food will help them plan their meals better.
  2. The serving size in household measurements e.g., cups, teaspoons, etc., help consumers to know how much is usually eaten.
  3. The per serving column helps consumers to assess the nutritional contribution each serving of the food.
  4. The per 100g column enables shoppers to easily compare the nutrient content of similar products.
  5. Number of servings per package is useful when planning the weekly shopping list or family meals and subsequently deciding how much to buy.

Information for Food Companies

To further enhance the Nutrition Labelling programme, we have come out with a "Formatting NIP Online" module to enable food companies that have analysed their food products with accredited laboratories, to formulate a Nutrition Information Panel (NIP) online. This module will allow food companies to register, apply for NIP, and keep track of their online application for NIP.

To encourage more food companies to display the recommended NIP, the Health Promotion Board provides assistance in Indirect Analysis as well. Please contact the personnel listed below if your product/s carry the recommended NIP and you wish to have your products listed above.
